Shooting sporting clays has been described as "the most fun you can have
with a shotgun" and it would be hard to argue with that. Sporting clays
combines trap, skeet type targets along with any other type of presentation
you can think of. Targets include but are not limited to over head targets,
bouncing rabbits, chandelles, and true incomers.
Like any of the shooting sports, anyone can shoot and is a great family
activity. Courses are typically thru fields, in the woods and over water and
can consist of any where from 6 to 20 stations. Target presentations can be
singles, report pairs ( after the shot at the first target a second is
launched from a different trap) or simo pairs where two targets are launched
at the same time! Most sporting clays rounds are 50 or 100 targets. Any
gauge can be used with 12 and 20 being the most common. The smaller gauges,
28 and 410 are usually more of a challenge on sporting clays courses. Over
and under shotguns and semiautos are the most common types of shotgun used.
No matter what the gun, correct fit are essential.
